The Makoko Christmas of Love Programme was developed to provide immediate relief to needy families in the deprived Makoko community, arguably the largest urban slum in West Africa. This gesture was informed by a reconnaissance visit to the community where social challenges, including prevalence of malaria, poor hygiene standards and other manifestations of poverty, were identified. Insecticide treated nets were presented as a preventive measure to curb the incidence of malaria, antiseptic bathing soaps, toothbrushes and toothpaste were presented to encourage better hygiene, and cash was also presented to poor families to cater for basic needs (especially feeding). A party was also hosted for the children with lots of refreshment and gift items to keep their hopes of and aspirations towards a happy future alive.
